lost 10 kilos. It was ridiculous. I remember we were travelling and we went swimming.
It was summer. My swimsuit was hanging off me. I said to my cousin “do you think
that I might be losing weight?” My cousin looked at me, she said “No no no, you are
definitely not losing weight.” She said “Your mum is pudgy and my mum is skinny
therefore you will always be pudgy and I will always be skinny.”
It is amazing how someone can say something as simple as pinning your weight to your
genetic makeup. By doing so you might start to believe that the reason why you are a
little bit overweight is actually something that's out of your control. Rather than you
choosing to take responsibility for your weight management and giving yourself
freedom and the possibility to try and lose the weight you might not even try.
The thing is even though you may fail, unless you give yourself the freedom to try and
lose the weight and achieve the goal, you will never know whether you'd have gotten
there because you never even tried. You were broken before you even started the
journey.
Self-talk is by far one of the most powerful tools you have at your disposal. The great
thing about our brains is that it can’t tell the difference between self-talk and external
talk. So, if you are constantly backing yourself and telling yourself you can do it, then
your brain will start believing you.
Self-talk comes with a disclaimer though. There is a dark side to self-talk and a danger
around where our positive self-talk can take us.
