Suddenly, M. Seward’s face resurfaced into memory
and he reminded his smile… Edward was nice but
also very impetuous and sometimes uncontrollable
when he was furious. By the way, he had manifested
no emotions when M. Stuart had talked about his
wife for the first time in the carriage. He had said ‘it
was not a big loss” … Suddenly, M. Stuart
understood. This manor was not an innocent gift. The
red traces on the stair railing… It was blood! Edward
had killed his wife in this house… and she was not
dead. She was here... It was her in the garden, she
attacked M. Stuart this afternoon. But … why? He did
not do anything wrong to her. He was always
friendly with her…

“However, if you do not mind, there is a room on the
first floor. I ask you to do not open it. There are some
cases which have to stay in there”.

“The room! The truth must surely be there!”, thought
rapidly M. Seward.
