Mr. Mawira Chitima
IFAD Representative and Country Director, Ethiopia. Head, Multi-Country Office in Ethiopia
New Ex-Com Co-Chair for RED&FS SWG
Mawira Chitima is IFAD’s Representative and Country Director for Ethiopia, and Head for the
multi-Country Office (Eritrea, Ethiopia and South Sudan). Mr. Chitima is also under process to
Represent IFAD in the African Union Commission. Before moving to Ethiopia, Mr. Chitima was
the IFAD Lead Global Technical Specialist in Water and Rural Infrastructure at the International
Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), based in Rome. He assisted the Fund’s member coun-
tries in their efforts to design and implement programmes with water and rural infrastructure
components.
Mr. Chitima has over 28 years’ experience in irrigation,
rural infrastructure and agricultural investments in Africa,
Asia and Eastern Europe. He previously worked as a Senior
Infrastructure Specialist with Ecorys (United Kingdom), Ag-
ricultural Investment Analyst with Mastermind Solutions
(Zimbabwe), Project Director at Technoserve (Zimbabwe),
independent rural infrastructure specialist, Project Manag-
er at ESWADE (Eswatini) and Principal Irrigation Specialist
at AGRITEX (Zimbabwe).
Mr. Mawira Chitima Mr. Chitima holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture (with
IFAD Representative and Country Director, honours) from the University of Zimbabwe and a master’s

Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He holds qualifica-
tions in negotiation and leadership from London School of Economics, UK and Harvard Law School,
US and Negotiation and Influence from Wharton College, US. He is a member of the American Soci-
ety of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, the Zimbabwe Irrigation Institute and the South African
Irrigation Institute.
He is now serving as the Ex-Com Co-Chair for the RED&FS SWG.
