to mandate allocation of loan Commercial Banks’ portfolio to the agriculture sector. Such de-
cision has been made by the National Bank of Ethiopia for commercial Banks to allocate 5%
of their loan portfolio to the agricultural sector

Currently, AGRA has embarked upon developing its 2021-30 strategy. During this strategy pe-
riod it will continue reinforcing and deepen its past efforts around the three identified area of
work namely, Country Support & Policy Engagement, System and farmer’s level intervention and
strengthening partnership for inclusive agricultural transformations.

6. Development and Modernization of the Poultry Sector in Ethiopia

The Government of Ethiopia has recognized that the development of the poultry subsector is the
key to reducing poverty, achieving food and nutritional security, and contributing to the national
GDP. According to The Livestock Master Plan (LMP) significant strategy action items are outlined
to boost the production and supply of poultry products. The Government is investing a lot in
creating a conducive environment for foreign and local investors through the development of in-
dustrial parks and also working towards improving the legal frameworks and working procedures
for the convenience in doing the business.
Poultry has a significant role in the Ethiopia rural community as a source of income and nutrition.
About 45% of the rural households in Ethiopia, which is estimated about 8.1 million households
holds up to 9 chicken and about 1.7 million of households have between 10 and 49 number of
chickens each (CSA 2018).
The role of the commercial sector is increasing and overtaking the share of the traditional back-
yard poultry farming system from year to year in terms of production volume. Data on poultry
population are collected as part of the livestock survey, and the total poultry population at coun-
try level is estimated to be about 57 million. Poultry includes cocks, cockerels, pullets, laying
hens, non-laying hens and chicks. Consequently, most of the poultry are laying hens (34.26
percent), followed by chicks (32.86 percent),. Pullets are estimated to be about 6.47million in
