AGRA is a farmer-centered, African-led, and partnerships-driven institution that is transform-
ing Africa’s smallholder farming from a solitary struggle to survive to businesses that thrive. The
goal is to increase incomes and improve food security for 30 million smallholder farm house-
holds in 11 African countries by 2021.
Accordingly, AGRA’s interventions in Ethiopia among others include the following.

1. System and farmer’s level
AGRA’s five-year (2017-21) strategy in Ethiopia is to contribute to catalyzing a sustainable and
inclusive agricultural transformation by increasing incomes and improving food security of 1.8m
smallholder farmers. The strategy focuses on building key systems of service delivery to small-
holder farmers, supporting the development of evidence-based policies to create an enabling
environment and enhancing State Capacity.
The seed sector was selected as one key area of intervention to improve access to quality cer-
tified seeds. AGRA is tackling two systemic issues in the seed sector including shortage of Early
Generation Seeds (EGS) and poor quality of seeds. To this end, it has invested in projects to boost

the production of EGS and improve the quality of seed through capacity building. The latter in-

cludes training of personnel, upgrading labs, improving mobility of seed inspectors and digitizing
the seed certification management system.
