For senior management roles, the examples that you give in an interview will
need to demonstrate breadth of thinking with a broader focus. At this level, it
is likely that decisions will have an impact on a whole business area or even
on the organisation as a whole, and that it will be longer lasting. The financial
implications are also likely to be bigger. An interviewer will be looking for
evidence that issues have been well thought through, that they demonstrate
awareness not only of the internal organisational environment but also of
external factors, including other organisations, the industry as a whole, the
economy and, potentially, the political agenda. As you can see, many factors
need to be drawn into the ‘thought’ domain at this level.
REVIEW YOUR THOUGHT
LEADERSHIP ExPERIENCE
Think of examples that you could give in response to these three
questions, based on your experience.
n Describe an occasion when you have initiated significant change in
the workplace for the benefit of the organisation.
n Tell me about a time when you have used recent developments in your
area to inform your decision making.
n Can you give me an example of where you had to develop a new
strategy?
