MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE
PHILIPPINE TECHNOLOGICAL COUNCIL (PTC)

On behalf of the PTC Executive Officers, the Board of Trustees, and
the whole PTC family, I am deeply honored to congratulate all of
you on the occasion of your 19th PIIE National Congress, 11th
Research Conference, 2nd AI Summit and CEO Forum, and PIIE-
Cebu 20th Anniversary which will all be held at the City Sports Club,
Cebu Business Park, Cebu City on November 15-16, 2024.

“AI at the Core: Revolutionizing Business Strategies”

As you all are already aware of, engineering has always been in
the forefront of developing and implementing solutions to human
problems and needs. Even with the pervading VUCA contexts in
practically all aspects of human lives, engineering has continued
to play the above role and contributed much to societal progress.
For all intent and purposes, engineering has surely made life
easier and life expectancy longer, among other benefits afforded
us by technology.
TIt is noteworthy, however, that engineering has also undeniably impacted, inadvertently or otherwise,
human lives negatively in more ways than one in the past. Such adverse impacts can and may continue
in the future especially in the current contexts where, in recent times, technological developments
unexpectedly cause significant disruptions in our daily lives.

Your theme for this year’s National Congress, “AI at the Core: Revolutionizing Business Strategies”,
addresses positively one of the major technological albeit formidable developments of the decade –
Artificial Intelligence. How AI will eventually be embedded and adopted in our daily lives will dictate the
extent and nature of its societal impact. AI is expected to revolutionize how engineering solutions are
developed and implemented. The use of advanced technologies and AI-powered systems to
revolutionize business strategies, enhance workplace processes and, thereby, eventually benefit
humankind will largely be influenced by how strong our commitment is to the more encompassing,
human-centric societal value and wellbeing. The value that “places the wellbeing of the worker at the
center of the processes and uses new technologies to provide prosperity beyond jobs and growth while
respecting the production limits of the planet.” The value that places primacy of man over even the
most advanced of AI-driven systems with and among which man will eventually find himself living.

The above are aspirations which could only be realized if we, the engineering professionals, reset
ourselves to face the VUCA world. And I believe we can still be a different breed of professionals if we
seek to continually sharpen our fundamentals, improve our ability and commitment for lifelong learning
and keep pace with technologies, strengthen our innovative spirit and our team play, and develop real
concern and love for others, for our environment and for our society, among other attributes. It
requires one to have a strong commitment to ethical norms and values and, thereby, enable us to
mitigate unwanted use of engineering and technology which may adversely impact humankind.

Again, congratulations to all of you! More Power to PIIE at Mabuhay po tayong lahat!
