D. Strategies for Effective Revision
To revise effectively, it helps to distance yourself from
your draft for a short time before reviewing it again with fresh
eyes. Here are some strategies to make your revision process
more productive:
1. Take a Break: After finishing your first draft, step away from
it for a day or two before revising. This allows you to return
to it with a fresh perspective and catch issues you may have
missed earlier.
2. Reverse Outlining: Create an outline based on your draft as
it stands. This can help you identify if your essay’s structure
is clear and logical. If your outline doesn’t match the original
structure you intended, consider reorganizing your essay.
3. Read Aloud: Reading your essay aloud can reveal awkward
phrasing, confusing sentences, and areas where the flow
breaks down. This also helps you check for logical coherence
and smooth transitions.
4. Peer Feedback: Sometimes, another person can spot issues
that you might miss. Sharing your essay with a peer and
asking for feedback on your thesis, organization, and
argumentation can provide valuable insights for revision.
