3. Voice Reflection Journal
Description: Students keep a writing journal where they
reflect on their voice as writers. Over the course of a few
weeks, they write several short essays or reflections on
different topics, experimenting with different voices (e.g.,
authoritative, reflective, humorous). At the end of the
project, they write a reflection on how their voice evolved
and how they can apply it in academic writing.
Objective: To help students develop and refine their
personal voice in writing, and to explore how voice can
shift depending on the purpose and audience.
Assessment: Evaluated based on the creativity and insight
shown in their reflections and how well they demonstrate
an understanding of voice in their writing.
4. Tone and Voice Debate Essay
Description: Students are assigned controversial topics
and asked to write two short essays on the same topic.
One essay should adopt a formal, neutral tone, while the
other should reflect a personal, passionate voice. They
will then compare and contrast how tone and voice affect
the strength of their argument.
Objective: To allow students to experiment with different
tones and voices and reflect on how these elements
influence the persuasiveness of an essay.
Assessment: Graded based on the student’s ability to
maintain distinct tones and voices in each essay, and
their analysis of the impact of these choices.
