E. Finding Your Voice as a Writer

Voice is the distinct personality and perspective that comes
through in a writer's work. It is what makes your writing unique
and allows your individuality to shine. Voice reflects your
experiences, opinions, and style of thinking. While academic

essays may require a more formal voice, this doesn’t mean losing
your individuality. Your voice should still come through, even in
formal writing, by presenting your ideas with confidence and
       originality.

Developing a strong voice in your writing takes practice.
Here are a few ways to cultivate it:
Be authentic: Write in a way that feels natural to you, while
still adhering to the conventions of the essay type.
Stay true to your opinions and ideas: Even in academic
writing, your personal insights can strengthen your
argument, as long as they are backed by evidence.
Read widely: The more you read, the more you will discover
how different writers develop their voices. This can help you
           refine your own.
Balance formality with personality: In academic writing, you
can still infuse your voice by selecting words and phrases
that align with your unique way of thinking, while remaining

           professional.
