Sustainable Cities
and Communities
Cities are responsible for 70% of global CO2 emissions – they are indeed
major contributors to the problem, but may also be an integral part of
the solution – in both urban and neighborhood terms.
The concept of “urban sustainability” suggests how urban lifestyles
may be transformed, in conjunction with largescale infrastructural
changes. At times “urban sustainability” is extremely valuable, resulting
in improved urban living with considerably less effort and cost than
largescale changes.
Primary Challenge \ Ensuring intelligent urban planning which
generates safe, affordable and resilient cities
\ Interim goals
11.1 Safeguarding access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and
basic services.
11.2 Providing access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport
systems for all, improving road safety, especially by expanding public transport,
with special attention to the needs of people in vulnerable situations, women,
children, persons with disabilities and older persons.
