\ What’s happening in the world…?
Did you know that…?
• In October 2016, at the Habitat III United Nations global summit, a New Urban
Agenda was adopted to discuss sustainable urban management and determine
strategies for urban sustainability.
• Many countries around the world have by now identified the neighbourhood
and the community as indices for transforming the social quality of life in urban
settings.
• In Paris, privately owned vehicles are banned from crossing half the city
centre’s spaces. The other half of the city’s streets have been pedestrianized,
allowing more space for bicycle lanes and walking. The number of Parisians
who own cars has dropped by 45%, while the number of those who ride
bicycles has risen by 15%.
• In 1997, the South London Borough of Sutton initiated BedZED – the UK’s first
large-scale, mixed-use sustainable community. It included 100 apartments
and 2500 square meters of offices, and was intended to reduce residents’
ecological footprint and level their CO2 emissions. Studies show that only half
the reduced rates of emissions are due to low impact building materials and
building techniques, while the other half is the outcome of shifts in residents’
lifestyles.
