3. LIBRARY COLLECTION
As defined by The Free Dictionary by FARLEX, Library collections are the
published works and other documents collected by libraries for public use and
made accessible through a system of catalogs and other card files. There are
three types of library collections- general, subject, and specialized --- and
these are divided into such categories as books, journals, newspapers,
audiovisual materials, pictorial publications, sheet music, phonograph records,
maps, and microfilms, depending upon the nature of the collection
(https://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Library+Collections).
As Covid -19 Virus hits the world, the library as well was affected from
the library staff, services and collections. According to the survey conducted
by Wiley’s Library Aspirations 2021, collections was the third in rank among
the list of librarian aspirations in 2021. The library aims to provide better
services by providing quality collections whether print or electronic. This
pandemic drives us librarians to shift from printed materials to online
resources. But the library aims to balance collections in formats considering
that there are clienteles who still valued printed materials. In addition, not all
clienteles has the pleasure of using the internet or even having their own
gadgets to access online resources.
Building collections of the library’s digital resources to support
research, this reflects a shift in libraries priorities to make resources
digitally available for users.
Through this pandemic, stakeholders of libraries have seen the benefits
of having a well-stocked digital library. Institutions with strong collections of
digital resources have found the transition to distance learning and working
less challenging as libraries are able to fully support their users’ needs and
demands in digital resources. Besides that, the lack of physical access to the
library, combined with higher awareness by students who previously were not
utilizing online library services have also led to an increase in usage of
electronic resources. This year, librarians are looking to further prioritize
digital resources over print as libraries around the world continue to tilt its
budget in favor of electronic resources such e-books, e-journals, and more.
The JHCSC Library adopted Collection Development Policy, this CDP help
the library to make the collection well-balanced in every program offered by
the College.
