Library materials are expensive to purchase process and house. The library
acknowledges the necessity of preserving all library holdings to keep them in
good shape and to ensure the availability. This program shall be employed for
proper care and to prolong the life of books and other library materials for the
use of the members of the academic community. The preservation and
security process of these materials include naming and labeling of each hard
ware and peripherals in order to easily identify and locate materials owned by
the library. This could also be used for inventory purposes
Library employees and library users will be informed of the proper care
and handling of library materials.
• Temperature and humidity controls are essential for maintenance
of library materials
• Repair of damaged materials is done from time to time. Binding
is done to preserve periodicals and other materials. Print
periodicals and journals are bound regularly and are intended for
inside reading only.
The following are the guiding principles and elements in the
preservation of library materials:
1. Identify the materials requiring preservation measures such
as rare books, out of print titles of Filipiniana.
2. Evaluate and improve the physical care of library materials by
conducting repair and mending of library materials.
3. After the book is used and found it to be damaged, it has to
be set aside for immediate repair.
4. When some pages of the book are missing and another copy
is available, the missing pages be photocopied and inserted to
complete the missing pages.
5. Education, training and orientation be provided to staff,
students and faculty for proper handling and care of library
materials.
V. REPLACEMENT OF MATERIALS
Materials which have been lost or damaged are replaced. Decision is
made regarding the replacement of lost, damaged, or worn-out items, based
on the following criteria:
• Does the item being considered meet the general library
collection policy?
• Does the frequency of use justify replacement?
• Is the item used by class reserved reading? Or is it on a
faculty recommended reading list?
