 Osmotic diuretics
ex. Glycerol (oral) mannitol (iv)

  Osmotic pressure of the plasma ➔ attract water from interstitial
& transcellular fluids.
MOA  It is filtered at the glomerulus but is not reabsorbed from the renal

tubules ➔ osmotically attracts & retains water as it moves through
the nephron & into the urine.

Uses  Mannitol ➔ treat cerebral edema & reduce intracranial pressure.
 Glycerol & mannitol ➔ ttt of acute glaucoma.
 Excessive plasma volume expansion ➔ heart failure & pulmonary

edema.
