In July Miriam Cooney (oboist, Year 12) and
Sel Hardaker (violinist, Year 11) attended
the Winter School of the Young Mannheim
Symphonists program at Santa Sabina College
Strathfield. A week of intensive rehearsals
concluded with the orchestra performing a
public concert, featuring Coriolan Overture by
Beethoven, Symphony No. 1 by Eberl, London
Symphony by Haydn and Wind Quinet No. 2 by
Reicha, performed by the newly formed Wind
Ensemble.
The Young Mannheim Symphonists program is
designed to give school students and emerging
musicians the opportunity to discover for
themselves the magic of approaching music
with appropriate performance style.
Later in the year, the Music Department was
celebrating Sel’s selection into the Australian
Honours Ensemble Program (AHEP) at
rd
th
Queensland Conservatorium from 3 to 6
October.
Meanwhile, vocalist Mary Smallhorn (Year 10)
was selected, for the State Honours Ensemble
Program (SHEP) and sang with the Sarah
Hopkins Vocal Ensemble.
In partnership with Schools, each of these
programs connects the finest young musicians
with a team of eminent international and
national conductors in the pursuit of musical
excellence.
The programs involved four days of intensive
rehearsals culminating in six Grand Finale
Concerts which were open to the public on
th
6 October in the Conservatorium Theatre. A
wide variety of repertoire was performed by
the AHEP String Ensemble including works
by Vivaldi, Corelli, Britten, Holst, Brahms,
Grainger, Bernstein and Sondheim.
Meanwhile, the Drama Department was
celebrating the selection of Year 12 students
Ethan Bromilow and Bella Wellstead for the
Riverside Theatre Upstage Club, a highly
selective national program which offers
applicants access to performances and
exclusive workshops led by professional
theatre makers.
In further exciting news, Bella has also been
selected as a Griffin Ambassador in the Griffin
Theatre’s program for students in Years 10
to 12.
This program gives students access to all
areas of Griffin Theatre’s operations, industry
professionals, performances and workshops,
with the aim of supporting young and talented
theatre-makers.
