20 | CULTURAL STUDIES
JAPAN TOUR
In December, twenty two students together with four
members of Staff travelled to Japan for the biennial
Japan Cultural Studies tour.
In addition to visiting our sister schools in Nagoya,
the extensive fifteen-day itinerary was peppered with
many sightseeing highlights, including new destinations
that took the group to places not usually experienced
by tourists.
Their first stop was a visit to the Hiroshima Peace
Museum where they listened to A-Bomb survivors talk
about the effects of nuclear war then and now. They
also presented 1,000 paper cranes that students in
Years 7-11 had made over the course of the year, whilst
local students interviewed our students on the concept
of peace. The following day the group visited Miyajima
Island, where they were fortunate enough to witness a
traditional Shinto wedding.
BMGS has ‘sister school’ relationships with two
schools in Nagoya and, during the visit to Yamada High
School, the students had the opportunity to undertake
activities like calligraphy and a tea ceremony as well as
helping Japanese students with their English.
