Year 10 student Scarlett Quin has been awarded
a Highly Commended for the 2020 Australia-
Japan Relations Essay Contest. The Consulate-
General of Japan, in Sydney, conducts this annual
contest in order to encourage and develop a better
understanding of Japan, and Australia-Japan relations
amongst secondary school students in New South
Wales and the Northern Territory.
This year, our Japanese students in Years 9 and
10 submitted entries to the contest as a part of
their course work. The Senior Division’s topic was
“Consider an aspect of Japanese culture that has
been embraced in Australia. Introduce it and explain
why you think it is popular in Australia”.
Scarlett submitted a well-crafted essay reflecting on
her mother’s cultural experience in Japan and, in an
outstanding result, received a Highly Commended
th
award, listed 4 in the nine recipients of this level of
award.
Y OUNG LA WYERS IN THE MAKING
YOUNG LAWYERS IN THE MAKING
Kalana Campbell-Fuller, Scarlett Weston-Cole
and Mirah Larkin (Year 11) took part in an online
Future Young Lawyers Program, an initiative of
The Law Society of NSW. This was introduced to
Year 11 students as an alternative to the Mock Trial
competition in the face of COVID-19 restrictions and
to create new opportunities for students.
The program gives students the opportunity to learn
from experienced and knowledgeable solicitors. Over
six weeks, the students have been engaged in topics
such as An Introduction to Australian Legal Systems,
Advocacy for Everyone, Law Reform and Policy Making
in Australia, Ethics in the Courtroom, Telling your Case
Narrative and, lastly, Mock Trial: Some tips for opening
and closing addresses and cross-examination.
LEADING THE WAY
LEADING THE W A Y
Indigo Franklin (Year 11) was selected as one of just thirty-five young
people to participate in the NSW Online Youth Leadership Project for
this year.
Indigo, a recently elected Pitt House Captain for 2020/2021,
was invited to be a part of this online program as a result of her
involvement with Youth Parliament, which has been unfortunately
postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.
This YMCA program offers many online workshops and courses
on topics such as values, strengths, decision making, teamwork and
service. Students work in small groups to develop and implement
community projects in three key areas: inclusion and diversity, mental
health and environment.
