Whilst our Year 10 team AWAKEN was
celebrating its Nationals campaign, our Year 9
F1 in School’s teams were busy preparing for the
Regional level of their competition.
Throughout Terms 2 and 3 the dedicated
Technology and STEM Co-curricular students
worked together in teams of three to four to
design and manufacture their unique cars.
Each team was divided into specific roles:
Team Manager, Graphic Designer, Design
Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer and
Marketing Manager.
The students created websites and a social media
presence, designed logos and T-shirt graphics,
and used CAD software and Adobe to design
the various elements of the cars, portfolio’s
and videos. Students also learnt how to use the
School’s new CNC router, 3D printers and Air
Trace testing machine.
Under COVID-19 regulations, the Regional
competition was live streamed, with students
gathering together in class to watch their car
racing against each other and other schools
competing in the Sydney Western Division.

When the results of the regionals were
announced we were advised of the students’
stunning results, with four of our six teams
qualifying for the State Finals. The teams were
Apollo, Perpetrol and Peak in the Development
Class, and Photonic Racing in the Professional
class. Although conducted online and as a
‘virtual’ competition, BMGS mounted an
excellent campaign at the State Finals and,
following a tense wait, we learned that three of
our four teams had qualified for the National
Finals: Perpetrol, Peak and Photonic Racing.
This was a stunning result, and BMGS is the
first School in the competition’s history to have
three teams qualifying for the National level of
competition.
The national competition will be contested in
March 2021, however, it will be modified to a
‘virtual’ Final with online presentations replacing
face-to-face meetings with the judges.
Since our first campaign in 2015, BMGS has
built an enviable reputation in this competition,
reaching the State titles each year, progressing
to the National Finals for the past five years
and qualifying for - and attending - the World
Championships in Abu Dhabi in November, 2019.
