Food
in Arts
ood is, throughout human his-
F tory, one of the most important
elements of our culture and is omni-
present in all areas of life. When you
walk through the museums of Euro-
pean countries, it becomes clear to
everyone that since the early Middle
Ages, the famous and the not so fa-
mous painters have painted food as the
main theme or as an element in the
background of the picture. Today we
can look at a wide variety of paintings
as a source of knowledge about what
our ancestors, rich and poor, ate, what
they were served and what was on their
table in general.
The importance of eating can also be
recognized by the fact that a special ar-
tistic style was created that represent-
ed food, meals and laid tables: still life.
