       Dosage Forms Selection

        Gels and solutions have a drying effect and may cause contact dermatitis. However,
        these dosage forms are not greasy and may be more beneficial in patients with oily
        skin
        Creams and lotions are generally are recommended for dry or sensitive skin and for use
        during dry winter weather
        Ointment vehicles are not used, because they are occlusive and tend to worsen acne
        To prevent acne, choose cosmetics labelled "non-comedogenic," which means it's designed
        not to clog pores

      When to Refer to Physician ???

                ✓ In case of severe irritation or hypersensitivity: If severe skin irritation or
                sensitivity develops, stop use of irritant and see an appropriate health care
                provider
                ✓ If you experience tightness in the throat, breathing problems, feeling faint, or
                swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, or lips with use of an acne product, seek
        emergency medical attention (Hypersensitivity)
                ✓ Acne resistant to self-treatment regimens: If improvement has not occurred
                after 6 weeks of treatment with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid or 8–12 weeks
                of adapalene, seek further medical evaluation
                ✓ Medical referral should be considered for moderate to severe acne, presence of
                certain exacerbating factors (e.g., comedogenic drugs)

       Special Populations

                ✓ Pregnancy: if pregnancy occurs during treatment with any acne medication, the
                medication should be discontinued & refer physician
