Roots containing Phlobatannins
Krameria Root (Rhatany Root)
Botanical origin: the dried, usually fragmented, underground organs of
Krameria triandra Ruiz and Pavon Family Leguminaceae. It contains not less
than 5.0 per cent of tannins, expressed as pyrogallol, calculated with reference
to the dried drug.
Constituents:
• Mainly tannins ( 7-18 %) phlobatannins known as
krameria tannic acid (dark red colour )
• phlobaphenes: polymeric, insoluble oxidation products of
the tannins
• 2-two benzofuran derivatives (phenolic ) which are effective U.V. filters,
can be used as sun- protection pharmaceutical preparations.
Uses:
1. mainly used as astringent In the treatment of diarrhaea and dysentery .
In haemorrhage and haemorrhoids .
it is used in dental medicine as a mouth wash (gargle)
In dermatology is used for cleaning of wounds.(Tr. Krameria)
2. In cosmetics as sun protection pharmaceutical preparations.

Inflammation of the mouth and pharynx.
