• Back titration is applied to resolve the problems encountered with direct
titrations:
1- Reaction between sample and titrant is slow.
2- The sample is in solid form and requires excess of titrant for complete
reaction, e.g. CaCO3 , ZnO
3- The sample is volatile, e.g. NH3
4- No suitable indicator is available.
