What causes diarrhea?
• Infections (bacteria, virus , protozoa….)
• Diseases (GIT, AIDS…)
• Drug-induced (Antibiotics., etc.)
• Food-induced (food poisonning)

Types of diarrhoea
• According to duration
• Acute (<14 days)
• Persistent or Chronic (>2-4 week)
• According to origin:
• Acute diarrhe Self limiting due to:
• 1-contaminated food (poisonning)
• virus -bacteria
• 2-food intolerance: fatty or spicy food, caffeine or milk
intolerance- food allergies
• 4-drugs induce diarrhea
• 5-non GIT acute/chronic illnesses
• Chronic diarrhea more serious, lasts longer than 2 weeks caused by:
• 1-Protozoal infection
• 2-Diseases-Hyperthyrodism-pancreatic disease-IBS & IBD, AIDS..
• 3. malabsorption syndrome (lactose intolerance)
