Secretory diarrhea:

• Occurs when the intestinal wall is damaged, resulting in
 an increased secretion rather than absorption of
 electrolytes into the intestinal tract.

• Common sources include: -

   • Bacterial endotoxins E. coli- v. cholerae- shigella - s. aureus.

   • Bacterial infectionsShigella -salmonella
   • Viral infections Rotavirus - Norwalk virus

   • Protozoal infectionsGiardia lambila - Entamoeba histolytica
   • Miscellaneous IBS,
   • Medications (prostaglandins, antibiotics, colchicine and

     chemotherapy)

   Motility disorders (Motor)

    • Results in decreased contact time of the fecal
      mass with the intestinal wall so less water is
      absorbed from the faeces.

        • Motility disorders include: IBS, diabetic neuropathy
         and gastric/intestinal resection.
