Strophanthus seed (Arrow poison seed)

Medicinal part: The dried ripe seeds of Strophanthus kombe deprived of
their awns. One gram of strophanthus corresponds in potency to not less than
0.055 g of the international standard ouabain.

Test for Identity: If 80% H2SO4 is added to the powder or the endosperm

a green colour is developed.

Constituents:

Strophanthus kombe` contains cardioactive glycosides (8-10%) known as
Strophanthin K which consists of a mixture of glycosides adjusted to
possess 40% of the activity of anhydrous ouabain. The principal glycosides
are K Strophanthoside, K Strophanthin-β and Cymarin, all based on the
genin strophanthidin.

Indications and usage: The uses of stropanthus seeds are similar to those

of Digitalis leaves ie. as a cardiotonic drug.
-The glycosides in addition to its cardiotonic activity has a diuretic effect as
a secondary action. Also, they have emetic effect.
Drug Interactions: Simultaneous administration of quinidine, calcium salts,
laxatives and glucocorticoids enhance both effects and side effects.
