Pumping of the Mobile Phase
High Pressure Pumping Systems
❑ Remember …… the mobile phase is forced through a very
fine stationary phase ….. High pressure (6000psi) & Flow
control are needed.
❑ The quality of a pump for HPLC is measured by how steady
and reproducible a flow it can produce (pulse-free flow).
❑ A fluctuating flow rate can create detector noise that obscures
weak signals.
❑ Flow rate setting range is wide: 0.01 to 10 ml/min.
