Celery seed has been listed as GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe) by
the FDA.
Pharmacological Actions (In-vitro & animal studies) and Clinical studies:
- Celery seed oil has been reported to exhibit bacteriostatic activity

   against wide range of bacteria
- Celery extract has been reported to possess diuretic activity
There is a lack of clinical research assessing the effects of celery fruit
Herbal adverse events:

Contra-indications, Warnings:
Celery fruits contain phototoxic compounds, furanocoumarins that can
trigger photosensitivity reactions. These effects are more pronounced in
people with history of plants, pollen, or foods allergies.
. The concentrations of furanocoumarin are reported to increase
considerably in diseased celery stems (brown color) and should not be
ingested.

Pregnancy and lactation:
the use of celery fruits is contra-indicated during pregnancy. The fruit is
reputed to act as abortifacient. Also, the oil has uterine stimulant activity.
(N.B: celery stems can be safely used in food amounts).
It is better not to be used by lactating women as It is not known whether
constituents of celery fruit appear in breast milk.
