Introduction to Pharmaceutical solutions
Dispersed systems
systems consist of one component, the disperse phase distributed throughout another
component, the dispersion medium/ continuous phase.
Based on the size of dispersed phase, three types of dispersed systems are considered;
Colloid
Particle size (1nm- 500nm)
Visible under electron microscope
Cannot traverse semi permeable membrane and ultra filtration sets
Example: Hydrocolloids (Gels), nanoparticles (nanosuspension, nanoemulsion
True solution
is a mixture of two or more components that form a homogenous molecular dispersion
(Monophasic liquid dosage forms).
The components are referred to the solute & the solvent.
Solute: is the dissolved agent (usually the smaller portion).
Solvent: is the component in which the solute is dissolved (usually the greater portion).
