Traditional Terms for different pharmaceutical
sols.

                   Type      Description
                   Syrups
                             oral aqueous solutions containing high concentrations of sucrose or other sugars.
                   Elixirs
                             hydroalcoholic solutions that contain alcohol as a cosolvent have traditionally

                             saturated aqueous solutions of volatile oils or other aromatic or volatile
                   Spirits   substances.

                             alcoholic or hydro-alcoholic solutions of volatile substances. Some spirits are
                             used as flavouring agents, others are medicinal.

Extracts &                   All are alcoholic or hydro-alcoholic solutions prepared from vegetable materials,
tinctures                    animal or chemical substances.

   NOTE: both spirits & aromatic water are solutions of volatile principles.

Requirements of successful
pharmaceutical solutions

    All pharmaceutical solutions must be generally stable and acceptable to the patient.
    Oral solutions must be palatable.
     Parenteral and ocular solutions must be sterile.
    Solutions which come into contact with body fluids must be isotonic (has the same salt
    concentration as cells and blood) and at the physiological pH especially if large volumes are
    used.
