Lesson 12: What is Guru Granth Sahib Ji?

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is our Guru now. Even though it

looks like a book, but the words inside are our Gurus’

words. These words are called Gurbani- the Bani or

words of the Guru. Gurbani teaches us good things to

live a good life.

Sikhs treat Guru Granth Sahib Ji as if it is alive and

living. We give Guru Granth the same respect as the

Sikhs gave to Guru Nanak and other Gurus. Guru

Granth Sahib has 1430 pages full of Gurbani. We even

call the pages of Guru Granth Sahib as ‘Ang’. ‘Ang’

means body parts like hands and arms. Gurbani is

written in Gurmukhi.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji is installed on a throne. The

throne is called ‘Paalki’. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is

covered with beautiful pieces of cloth. These
