Chapter 19: Structure and Uniqueness of Sikh Ardas

The congregational Sikh Ardas was put together by a group of selected Gurmukh
Sikh Scholars, who also wrote the text of the Sikh Rehit Mariyada. The
Gurmukhi text can be broadly divided into 7 parts. In the congregation the Ardas

may be led by a man or a Woman. At the end of first five sections, the person
leading the Ardas says “Khalsa Ji Bolo Ji Waheguru” and the congregation says
“Wahay Guru”. At the end of the Ardas the whole congregation says “Nanak
Naam Chardikala, Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhalaa”.

Sikh Ardas is unique in so many ways. Ardas starts with “Var Sri Bhagauti Ji Ki”.
In the first part of the Ardas, the first eight lines, up to remembering Guru Teg

Bahadur Ji are taken from Chandi Di Vaar written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The
word Bhagauti in the start of Ardas means Kharag, but here has been used to
represent the primal power of the Akal Purkh.

After paying respect to all the Gurus including Guru Granth Sahib, the Ardas
recounts the sacrifices of Sikhs but makes no mention of the enemies of the

Sikhs. The basic idea is to inspire the Sikhs to similar heroic deed in any future
             times of need.
