Dr Manpreet Kaur
Dr. Manpreet Kaur is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral
Sciences at University of California Davis, where she is leading
an internationally renowned Pediatric Mood Disorder Program
to advance understanding and early treatment of youth with
and at risk for lifelong mood disorders. The program
promotes healthy brain development starting in childhood and
boldly envisions prevention of progressive and chronic mood
disorders through research, education, and innovation.
Dr. Kaur was classically trained by many ragis over the years,
including Bhai Avtar Singh and Gurcharan Singh, Bhai Ajit Singh
Alankari, and Bibi Amrit Kaur. She competed and won first
prize in kirtan samelans around North America. She has
learned and composed kirtan in all 31 ragas and 62 variations
of ragas in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. She teaches gurmat
sangeet, and has judged for the Hemkunt Foundation Kirtan
competitions at the regional, national, and international levels for the past many years.
Manmeet Singh
Manmeet Singh is an award winning filmmaker, a classical
musician, a luthier, a traveler and a connoisseur of the
kitchen. His films, The Widow Colony & A Little Revolution deal
with the Sikh massacre of ‘84 and the impact of farmer
suicides on children respectively. In the music realm, he is a
part of the DC Indian Music Circle, Global Arts Council and has
a music group, the National Sufi Ensemble has performed at
the Kennedy Center and SXSW festival. Manmeet plays the
Sarangi, Sarod, Rabab, Dilruba, mandolin, harmonium, tabla,
Pakhawaj, among many instruments and is well versed in
Gurmat Sangeet Raags and taals. His passion is not limited to
just Sangeet but also its research, education and the prepping
of next generation of Kirtankaars. He is married to filmmaker
Harpreet Kaur and lives in Maryland.
