e - Engine Craft
A. The e engine craft will give students the opportunity to review akhars a, A
and all the vocabulary words that were introduced in previous lessons.
B. The < coloring sheet will introduce the idea of Ek Onkar, as it also begins
with e. 1 means 1 and E means God.
C. Share the sakhi of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the janeu ceremony. This is a
perfect example of how Guru Ji taught us the concept of <. For age
appropriate context, please refer to Inni Kaur's Journey With the Gurus.
Materials:
- Print out of sheet with engine, 3 box cars, a, A, e and the engine poem
(provided in student handbook).
- 9x12 craft paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Train whistle
Method:
1. Color, cut and paste the e engine and 3 train box cars on bottom part of
craft paper.
2. Color, cut and paste the akhar, in order, on box-cars. Encourage children
to remember the order of the akhars themselves. Paste the poem on top
center of construction paper as shown on the sample below.
3. Read and explain the poem to the group. What sound does the eerdi
engine make, what does an engine do, what is our engine carrying? This
is a great time to introduce colors in Punjabi; kala engine, lal dabbe.
4. Have the children line up to form a train of their own. Recite or sing the
poem as the children wind around the room. Addition of the train whistle
sound effect makes the activity even more enjoyable.
