s - Sooraj Craft and Seva Activity
A. For the sooraj craft, students will make a scenery of the sky on a paper plate
using play dough to make the sun and cotton balls for clouds.
B. In addition to learning the akhar s, students will also learn about the concept
of seva and the meaning of Sikh.
C. Students will distribute seb and santra as part of the seva activity in the
Langar Hall. Please ask the parents and students to bring a bag of seb/
apples and/or santray/oranges to class on the previous class session.
Materials:
- Homemade yellow play dough (recipe provided)
- Paper plates
- Cotton balls
- glue
- crayons
Methods:
1. Show the students a sample of what they will be creating. Encourage them
to describe what they see. What are some of the things they see when
they look up at the sky - sooraj, badal, cheeriyan, saat-rangi-peeng (also
begins with sassa). Encourage a Punjabi dialogue for the discussion. If
they are not responsive, ask then to share in English then translate for
them. Ask them to repeat after you each time. This is a great time to
introduce colors in Punjabi; peela sooraj, chitty badal, etc.
2. Each student will create their own sooraj using the play dough.
3. Use crayons and cotton balls to create a scenery of the sky.
4. Glue the sooraj onto the plate.
5. Ask them to share what they have created in Punjabi once they are done.
