The Chidi and The Ghada
We encourage you to tell the story in Punjabi, emphasizing the vocabulary the
students have learned.
It was one of the hottest days of the year, and there had been no rain in months.
Water was nowhere to be found. A very thirsty chidi was desperately searching
for water everywhere. The chidi came across a ghada and looked inside, hoping
to find just a drop to quench her thirst. Luck was on her side! She spotted a little
bit of water at the very bottom of the ghada.
Bring out a glass vase with a narrow neck, filled a quarter of the way with water.
You may add blue food coloring to the water for a more dramatic effect.
Excitedly, she craned her neck and reached into the ghada with her chunjh
(beak). OH NO! The ghada was too narrow, and her chunjh could not reach the
water. What was she going to do? She thought and thought, even trying to tip
over the ghada, hoping the water would spill out, but it was too heavy for her.
Suddenly, she spotted a pile of pebbles and had an idea!
Place the stones in a pile next to the pitcher.
One by one, she picked up the pebbles and started throwing them into the
ghada.
Ask the children to rise from their seats, pick up a single stone or marble from the
pile, and gently throw it into the vase. Ask them what they observe. What is
happening to the level of the water? Ask them to continue until the water level
reaches the neck of the vase.
With each pebble she threw in, the water rose little by little. The chidi worked very
hard. Once she was done throwing in all the pebbles she had found, she tried
again. She craned her neck and reached into the ghada with her chunjh, and she
was finally able to drink the water! The chidi drank so much water; her belly was
full, and her thirst was quenched.
