Managing mineral-rich water in a
professional kitchen
Here are some treatment options for managing mineral-rich water in professional
kitchens.
Water Softeners
How it works: These systems utilise ion exchange to replace calcium and magnesium ions
with sodium or potassium ions, reducing water hardness.
Benefits: Effective at preventing limescale buildup in pipes, boilers, and equipment.
Considerations: Regular regeneration with salt is required, and softened water may not be
suitable for drinking or certain cooking processes due to its altered chemistry.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems
How it works: Water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane that filters out
minerals and impurities.
Benefits: Produces very pure water, ideal for specific culinary uses (e.g. brewing coffee,
making pastries).
Considerations: May require remineralisation for some applications.
Descaling Solutions and Chemicals
How it works: Acidic solutions dissolve existing limescale deposits in equipment and pipes.
Benefits: Quick fix for removing buildup and restoring efficiency.
Considerations: Requires careful handling and proper disposal of chemicals. Regular
descaling is needed to maintain the equipment.
