Week Three:
The Duplication Game
The third week’s activity is focused around mathe-
matics again as well as recognizing, memorizing, and
observing. The duplication game is quite simple: your
task, as an adult, is to roam around your garden or
any other outdoor area you are in and to find various
natural items. For example, you could find pine cones,
leaves, twigs, feathers, pebbles, and many more simi-
lar items. Next up, you should invite your child to take
a look at each of these and should encourage him or
her to roam around the garden or park to find another
one of these.
This activity is great because it also encourages
your child to start connecting dots between living and
dead items. For example, a dead leaf is not the same
as a living leaf; a dead leaf will crunch up while a live
one won’t. This is also a great opportunity for you to
discuss this with your child and to explain concepts
such as living plants, caring for plants, and so on.
This activity is great when it comes to engaging
certain areas of learning such as communication
and language again, physical development as they
run around (hopefully with friends or siblings) to find
new items, mathematics as they are introduced to the
concept of doubles, and their understanding of the
world as made of living things and non-living ones. To
push this further, you could also make an arts activity
out of it, for example by making them glue the dead or
non-living items to paper and decorating it.
