Week Seven:
                          Sorting, Comparing,

                             and Categorizing

The activity to follow for week seven is more fo-
cused on the mathematics aspect of learning. This is
especially geared towards preschoolers as they can
learn more about how maths and the world are inter-
twined. For this activity, you will need a large white
sheet, a basket or bag to collect items, and natural
items such as pine cones, stones, and so on. First, go
on a nature walk with your child and let them choose
between ten and fifteen natural items, including re-
peats (for example, five leaves, three rocks, four pine
cones, etc). Then, mix all of these together. Laying
down all of the items on the white sheet, ask your
child to sort them according to different scales; co-
lour, size, and so on. Ask your child to categorize them
properly; leaves with leaves, stones with stones, and
              so on.

This activity focuses on the math of categorizing,
sorting, and comparing. Mathematics isn’t just about
counting, it involves a range of different activities!
This activity supports your child’s mathematics learn-
ing area while supporting their communication and
              language as well.
