Week Six:
Small World Exploration
This week’s activity is to explore the world on a
smaller level. In other words, what you need for it is a
magnifying glass and the right clothing to run around
the forest, the garden or park without getting all mud-
dy.
The world is more than what we see at first glance.
A lot of the things we see as children seem huge to
us, and therefore, children may have a hard time con-
ceptualizing how small and big certain things can be.
Just think of a place you visited as a child and going
back once you are much taller: don’t things seem
much smaller? This is also why looking at smaller
things and understanding how we live in companion-
ship and in a symbiotic relationship is important with
kids.
The activity is simple: go around the outdoor area
you have in proximity and encourage your child to
look at things through a magnifying glass. This not
only teaches them about the small things in life, but it
also gives them a new perspective on the small things
in the world. You can further encourage your child
and his or her learning by asking questions about
what they see, how it’s different within the magnifying
glass, and more. This is a great activity to further their
understanding of the world while supporting their
communication and language skills. A way to push
this even further would be to take a step back from
the activity and to encourage your child to discuss
these things further with his or her peers, thereby
encouraging their personal, social, and emotional
development.
