Week Eight:
                   The Alphabet in the Forest

As you may have noticed, so far, many of the activ-
ities touch mostly on mathematics, communication,
or arts. However, this is not to say that forest school
teaching does not work on literacy skills. This week’s
activity is all about learning more about the alphabet
and brings us back to an exercise we did previously:
the cards. Instead of having images and numbers,
this week, use cards to ask your child to make up
letters of the alphabet with various natural items.
Depending on your child’s age, you could do the entire
alphabet, or just a few letters. You could also encour-
age them to do punctuation while also asking them to
give you an example of a sentence with each type.

To do this, each card should have a specific letter
or symbol. These could also be pictures that you
have printed, such as an A made of twigs, or even an
S made of stones to make your child connect the S
sound to the letter. This activity is much more fo-
cused on the literacy area of learning.
