                      •  a structurally related class to tetracyclines
                      •  Tigecycline is the only commercially available member

                      •  Broad antimicrobial spectrum active against
                                  ➢  aerobic Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA, VRE
                                  ➢  aerobic Gram negative

                                  ➢  Good activity against anaerobic bacteria.
                                  ➢  Excellent activity against atypical bacteria
                       ➢  NO ACTIVITY against Pseudomonas spp.

                   Mechanism: binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosome
                   Chloramphenicol  inhibits  the  bacterial  enzyme  peptidyl  transferase,  thereby
