              1- Polyene

                • Polyene antibiotics are characterized by possessing a large ring containing a
lactone group and a hydrophobic region consisting of a sequence of four to seven
                    conjugate double bonds.

                • The only important polyenes are amphotericin B and nystatin.

                 Mechanism of action:
Act by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane

                               Formation of pores

                     Increase permeability to proteins and
                        monovalent and divalent cations

                                    Cell death.
