Mechanism of action:
• Glucan synthetase inhibitor
inhibit the fungal beta-(1,3)-D-glucan
synthase, the enzyme responsible for
synthesizing beta-(1,3)-D-glucan
leads to osmotic instability and cell death
Echinocandins
Caspofungin Micafungin Anidulafungin
• given as an IV infusion
Use:
• Caspofungin: recommended for invasive aspergillosis or candidiasis
unresponsive to treatment with amphotericin or itraconazole.
• Anidulafungin and Micafungin tend to be used as reserve drugs to
minimize the risk of resistance development
