                                                              Cell wall

                  Echinocandins

                  Mechanism of action:
                      • Glucan synthetase inhibitor

                  inhibit the fungal beta-(1,3)-D-glucan

                  synthase, the enzyme responsible for
                  synthesizing beta-(1,3)-D-glucan

leads to osmotic instability and cell death

                                                       Echinocandins

                       Caspofungin Micafungin Anidulafungin

                     • given as an IV infusion

                    Use:

                     • Caspofungin: recommended for invasive aspergillosis or candidiasis

unresponsive to treatment with amphotericin or itraconazole.

                     • Anidulafungin and Micafungin tend to be used as reserve drugs to

minimize the risk of resistance development
