2- Azoles
The azoles may be considered as two subgroups:
➢ Imidazole (the older drugs)
➢ Trialzole (the newer drugs)
Mechanism of action:
blocking the demethylation
of lanosterol to ergosterol
Accumulation of toxic
intermediate sterols
Increased membrane
permeability, cell death
Imidazole
Clotrimazole Miconazole Ketoconazole Econazole
• Majority are used as topical products
• Used for the treatment of superficial infections by
➢ Dermatophytes (skin pathogens)
➢ Pityriasis species (causing flaky skin and dandruff)
➢ Candida albicans
