Amphotericin B
It is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is thus
usually administered IV infusion only (2-6 hours) under strict
medical supervision.
• Lipid - based and liposomal formulations of amphotericin are
available which exhibit lower toxicity
➢ Liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB)
➢ Amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC)
Use
• active against most fungal pathogens and is used for systemic mycoses
• It is reserved for severe infections in critically ill, or immunocompromised
patients.
• For Life-threatening fungal infections: aspergillosis, systemic candidiasis
Toxicities
• Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, myalgias and headache during intravenous
infusions.
• At higher concentrations, Nephrotoxicity.
Nystatin
Use
• Treatment of cutaneous, mucocutaneous Candida
infections.
• It is rarely used for the treatment of other
infections
• Administered orally "swish-and-swallow”, topically.
• It is too toxic to be given by injection
