Adverse effects of penicillins
❑ Hypersensitivity reactions- most common
- (immediate, accelerated & late allergic reaction)
- skin rashes, fever, Bronchspasm, and
anaphylactic shock
❑ Gastrointestinal upset
- (orally administered preparations)
- Diarrhea, epigastric distress, nausea
- Vomiting, pseudomembranous colitis
❑ Superinfections
- results from alterations in intestinal flora.
- A higher incidence occurs with broad-spectrum penicillins
❑ May cause seizures after high doses by iv or in case of renal failure
