                   Spectrum:

                       •  Retain some activity against                True cephalosporins are more active than
                                                                       Cephamycins that have limited activity
                          Gram Positive bacteria                               against G+ bacteria
                       •  Greater activity against Gram

                          negative bacteria
                       •  Increased coverage to anaerobe
                       •  More resistant to beta-lactamase

                   Third generation

                                      Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime, Ceftazidime

                       •  Wider spectrum of action
                                               nd
                       •  Less active than 2  generation agents against Gram-positive cocci, but
                          much more active against Enterobacteriaceae
                       •  Can cross the blood brain barrier
                       •  Active against anaerobes

                   Cefotaxime, ceftriaxone                                Ceftazidime
                    •  adequate drug levels in CSF……empiric               active against Pseudomonas
                       therapy for bacterial meningitis                   aeruginosa

                    •  Not active against Pseudomonas                     It has poor CNS penetration
                       aeruginosa                                         and should not be used for
                                                                          meningitis
