7- Strongyloides stercoralis
Microfilaria:
- Males grow to only about 0.9 mm in length,
females can grow from 2.0 to 2.5 mm (0.08
to 0.10 in).
- Both sexes also possess a tiny buccal
capsule and cylindrical esophagus without a
posterior bulb.
- In the free-living stage, the esophagi of both
sexes are rhabditiform. Males can be
distinguished from females by two
structures: the spicules and gubernaculum.
Definitive host - Man.
Infective stage - Infective filariform larvae
Mode of infection - Contact with soil that is contaminated with free-
living larvae
- Auto-infection.
- rare cases of person-to-person transmission in:
❖ Organ transplantation
❖ Institutions for the developmentally disabled
❖ Long-term care facilities
❖ Day care centers.
Diagnostic stage - Rhabditiform larvae.
Site of localization - Small intestine
