Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Local Ethics Committee; typically, this name is used in the United States.
Intangibles or Intangible Assets
Something of value that is neither physical nor financial. Examples include brand, goodwill,
franchise, trademark, license, and patent.
Interactive Web or Voice Response System (IXRS)
Software that manages randomization and drug supply down to the site level (IVRS is Voice-
based, IWRS is Web-based).
Intercompany Segment
The intercompany segment indicates intercompany entities and is used to support
intercompany balancing. This segment mirrors the company segment.
Interim Monitoring Visit (IMV)
Monitoring visit conducted by the clinical research associate at an investigational site
periodically (typically once every 6-8 weeks) to ensure adherence to the protocol &
regulations.
Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
The discount rate that makes the net present value of all cash flows from a particular project
equal to zero. Generally speaking, the higher a project's internal rate of return, the more
desirable it is to undertake the project. IRRs are often used in capital budgeting to rank
prospective projects. Assuming all other factors are equal among the various projects, the
project with the highest IRR would be considered the most attractive.
International Air Transport Association (IATA)
Train and certify individual to handle and ship hazardous substances according to
regulations.
International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH)
International body that defines standards, which governments can transpose into
regulations for clinical trials involving human subjects.
